Goto Maki signs with Avex!

June 19, 2008

Congratulations to ex-H!P member Goto Maki for garnering a deal that could only rocket her to even greater heights. Hello!Online has the full details here including a full translation of an article that appeared in newspapers on June 19.

Shame on H!P for letting a person of such talent as Maki go, I don’t want to take away from any of the girls who sing for H!P, but Maki was one of their real and true singers. The girl has a great voice. And considering she seems to be the one person from Momusu everyone in Japan names immediately once you say you are a fan or Morning Musume, double shame on them for letting one of their most recognizable talents go. What on earth prompted them to waste her so? She has some great singles, but they really seemed to be letting her go right before she decided to leave. Did they think she was old hat or something? That there was no where else they could take her? I’d really like to know the business decisions behind their move.

Whatever the case this is fantastic news for Maki, and I am so very excited to see what she has in store for us and where she can go from here. With Avex she’s at the starting line and she’s going to be with us for the long run yet. She might be one of the few “talents” who break away from their parent agency only to find even greater fame and fortune in the embrace of another.

Go Maki-chan! Go!

Sorry for the neglect

April 20, 2008

I’ve been severely restless, suffering from spring fever I guess, and have neglected the hell out of my Jpop fandom. I’ve had Ongaku Gatas’ debut album for over a month now and though I’ve ripped it to my ipod, I haven’t even listened to it yet. I’ll take a moment to slap myself awake and then promise to get my act together and post some stuff worth reading.

On a related note I’m about half way through the subbed release of the Ohmynews Kago Ai interview. Even though I may have had negative thoughts of him in the past, I’m going to turn around my opinion of Ishimoto. I’m more than a little ashamed that I let a scandal rag’s rumors form an opinion in me of a man I didn’t even know. I was quite surprised by Kago’s statements that he had stuck by her and helped her through her darker times, and is still with her. She doesn’t come out and say they’re still a couple, but you really can infer it.

I’ll have a more in-depth article about the interview tomorrow. For now all I want to do is hug Ai, she looked ready to break down in tears a few times, but held it together and showed us how strong she is. She’s really digging through the dirt and revealing a LOT of extremely personal information that we never knew or could have guessed before, her struggles as an idol and finding her own identity. It takes a lot of guts to do that and I admire her 1000 times more for being able to do it.

Momusu Member Poll!

February 19, 2008

Paul at Hello!Blog is running another poll to gage the standing of H!P members with the fans. This time around he’s included C-ute and Berryz, but I optioned to skip this portion as I don’t know the members and feel it would be unfair to throw in a vote.

I can’t judge member standings now versus the first poll, as despite the fact that I participated, I didn’t save my results and don’t remember them 8 months on.

Please forgive the short write ups on why I feel each girl deserves what place. My idol fandom really goes by my heart and what I feel, and I’ve never been able to coherently put that into words.

1. Mitsui Aika - I don’t really know what to say save that I think she’s adorable. I’ve loved her from the moment she auditioned and was ecstatic when she won. One of the natural girls in the group. She always seems to be smiling and genuinely having a good time. Her smile is infectious. I just want to hug her.

2. Kusumi Koharu - Koharu and Aika should really be tied for first place. I love Koharu because she’s nuts. She’s bombastically cute. She gives everything her all and is never afraid to show off how insanely genki she is. She’s just so enthusiastic about everything. This part of her personality grates on some people’s nerves, but I love her for it.

3. Niigaki Risa - Gaki-san! She always seems to be smiling. She’s really grown on me lately. She’s another one of the natural girls. She’s got that girl next door sweetness going for her. She’s not trying too hard, she’s just being herself and having a good time.

4. Takahashi Ai - Ai-chan! I feel like she’s really beginning to blossom into her own now that she’s been given the leadership role. I’m envious of her ballerina skills. I wish I could move that gracefully. It’s an example of femininity that escapes me. Being one of the more quiet girls in the group I feel like I can identify with her a little bit more. Ai-chan, I’ll always support you!

5. Kamei Eri - Eri really caught my attention after her latest photo book was released. It was such a beautiful book. She has a natural and effortless beauty to her. Another girl next door. I should pay more attention to her, she’d probably rank a lot higher on my list.

6. Michishige Sayumi - Ah Sayumi. She’s really moved up my list. I’m almost positive that when I took this poll the first time that she ranked dead last. I can’t really say what she’s been doing that has suddenly jumped her up the rankings. Maybe I’m starting to see the real girl under the persona. Despite the cute act for cameras she seems really shy, which I can identify with. I read a quote attributed to her somewhere where she said something along the lines of “The computer used to be my friend, but now I go out properly.” My goodness, what a human thing to say. That was something very personal she admitted and I was really struck by it. I hope she continues to rise in my personal ranks.

7. Tanaka Reina - Reina! There really isn’t a reason she should be this far down on my list as I really like her! I’m kind of surprised she’s 3 from the last. She’s so confident and brazen. Maybe I should have put her farther up?

8 & 9. Junjun & Linlin - These two poor girls are only at the bottom of the list because I know next to nothing about them. I’m going to hit YouTube today and rectify that. We’ll see how they rank next time!

What was the biggest H!P event of 2007?

December 13, 2007

Buckle up, this is a long one.

While perusing the Hello!Online picture board, my eye was caught by the poll in the lower right hand corner. I prepared myself for a quick click of the mouse, a cursory viewing of the results, and moving on with my picture browsing. The only problem…. the poll and it’s possible choices were hard to pick between. As I sat weighing the possible choice to best fit, I though, Hey! Why not write a post about it?

The question is, What was the biggest H!P event of 2007? And boy howdy weren’t there A LOT this year? Like, whoa. It gave me a ton to think about, so I decided to go ahead and analyze each option.

Yoshizawa’s brother killed.
I wholeheartedly love Yossi, so for the New Year to start out this way was terrible. I felt truly horrified when I read the news and deeply saddened on Yossi’s behalf. Understanding her need to grieve, there was a wave of support for her from the H!P blogging community should she decide to take a leave of absence. Color us all shocked and amazed when she shouldered her burden and kept performing. For myself (and many others I am sure) it only further cemented our love and respect for this amazingly strong and talented young woman.

Since Hitomi decided to continue on with her career, this family tragedy did not have the effect it could have had she decided not to return. So this event, while horrible, was not the biggest thing to happen to H!P this year.

Momusu gets 2 Chinese girls.
This was big, this was HUGE and a complete and total shock to fans. Not only were there two new surprise members of the Eighth Gen of Momusu, but they hailed from the land beyond Japan! Sure there were foreign members in other H!P acts before, but NOT in their flagship group. Fan reaction went wild. A lot of people had faith in Tsunku’s decision, he had proven his intuition right before, and we were willing to keep our faith in his ability again. However some us, I am ashamed to say, attacked the two new girls, Junjun and Linlin, some people even went so far as to post horrendous racial and derogatory comments on their personal blogs! Those kind of actions are beyond belief. To think that foreign fans would be so embracing of one type of nationality and not another is mind boggling. As fans we should open our arms to any and all under the H!P banner.

I didn’t mean for that to turn in to a lecture. Getting back on track I would have to say that this was definitely a top contender for the biggest event in H!P for the year.

The end of Hello!Morning.
Honestly, I was really sad to see Hello!Morning go, but willing to embrace Harmoni@ (of which I’ve seen all of 2 or 3 episodes). We really should have seen the departure of H!M coming down the pipeline somewhere in the near future. So while this might have been a personal blow to some people who enjoyed H!M, Momusu is still on the air, so really, not that big of a deal. Plus I am sure H!P were trying to mix up the format of the show a bit to get the girls out and interacting with the public and maybe something new would draw in new viewers.

Kago Ai returns, Friday’d, Fired.
I actually did the write ups for every other topic before going in and writing this one. My God, this one still has me by the heart. At the time this scandal broke I was just getting into other H!P acts that weren’t Morning Musume, and W was the forerunner of my fandom. Ai and Tsuji were just so damn CUTE together! At first I was really disappointed in Aibon. Not so much that she got caught smoking underage, but that she was smoking at all. It’s so damn bad for you! Especially if you are a singer by profession. I felt terrible for Tsuji as this put her singing career at a standstill, and removed (it seems permanently) any chance of the fans hearing W’s last album Faithful.

But as time went on and we started to learn the extent of Ai’s burden, I began to feel for the poor girl more. Being the sole bread winner for her family, her Dad a split ex-con, her Mother a single Mom, and Aibon with much younger siblings to care for. I’m sure her workload was incredible, and she was trying to balance work with her relationship with (the now infamous) Ishimoto Yasuyuki. The poor girl was just trying to live a normal life outside of her “idol” duties.

This whole thing really brought to light the immense responsibility it is to be an idol. You have to be “in character” ALL THE TIME. There is no turn off switch, no down time. If you’re out in public, even just running to the store for toilet paper, or going out to eat, you still have to be in persona. She’d been living this life since she was 12 years old, and I’m sure she was tired of trying to wear that image 24/7. It’s really very, very sad. These girls sacrifice so much for the sake out our entertainment. Granted we reward them back with love and money, but is the trade off really equal?

This was a huge blow to H!P and I think one of their first MAJOR scandals. Even still, Aibon, I love you and hope you someday step up to the microphone again. (If not could we please at least run in to each other somewhere in NYC? I was crowd watching for you last weekend. LOL!) These events definitely rank up there as the biggest things to happen to H!P in 2007.

Yoshizawa graduates from MM.
Yossi! I was terribly sad to see Yossi leaving MM. However, she really was getting beyond the age demographic of the group. Other members graduated from MM and pursued solo careers (some with a hell of a lot more success than others) so it really shouldn’t have been that much of a shock. Plus it was known before her graduation even took place that she’d be participating in a new group and/or solo activities, so we knew she wasn’t totally going to disappear off the radar.

Tsuji/Iida pregnancies.
Kaorin I can say I really wasn’t too shocked to hear about. Tsuji on the other hand I was a little shocked about. We had heard a really awesome live recording of a new unit she was participating in, Gyaruru, under Tsunku’s TNX label, and seemed to be moving on from the scandals that broke up W. I was ultimately really excited for them both. Except for bowing out of the spotlight, this didn’t really affect H!P much as the two weren’t at the forefront at that moment in time. A great personal development for them both, but not the biggest event.

Fujimoto Friday’d/leaves MM.
Honestly… God I hope people don’t kill me for this, but honestly I didn’t really care all that much. I’m not that big of a Miki fan. I thought she was great in GAM, but like Yossi, she was getting a little too old for Momusu and it really was time to move on. If H!P couldn’t see it, then Miki was going to show them herself. I have utter respect for her there, standing up like she did, in the end though it was A-OK by me that she left Morning Musume.

Goto Maki leaves H!P.
This totally and utterly caught me by complete surprise. I really don’t feel like going into too much detail here as it’s all been discussed before…. but reading Maki’s reasons; exhaustion and artistic differences over her musical direction, I totally understand why she left. Was I sad to see her go? Absolutely, especially after she released such a kick ass album! But she wanted to move on with her life and I totally respect that. Losing their most successful solo artist had to be a blow to H!P, but if she was asking for it a long time coming, then it wouldn’t have been a shock to them. A shock to the fan community, but not to H!P.

There were a few other things that happened this year that I thought were pretty big that weren’t on the poll. The biggest…. the return of Konkon! That was HUGE! I was so excited when I heard she was coming back. What a windfall for the fans to have one of our departed beloveds come back to us! How awesome is that?!

In other news I finally received my package today containing the 10th Anniversary Morning Musume essay & photobook, as well as the photobook for Hitomi’s graduation concert this past spring. I’ve done a cursory glance through both and will be adding reviews and scans later, time permitting before Christmas. I will say though that the concert photobook has some amazing shots I’d love as posters.

On one last note, does anyone else find it amusing that the Up Front! International website is only in Japanese?

Defending Ai

November 20, 2007

Poor, poor Ai-chan. She’s getting picked on so much recently in the English speaking H!P Blogging community. I keep seeing the same comments over and over, and before I leave for home this holiday (and no computer access) I’d like to point out a few of my own opinions.

Ai-chan is getting all the lines! Well DUH! For one, she’s one of the strongest singers in the group, two, she’s the current leader. Why wouldn’t she be getting put front and center? I understand people grumble when their favorite doesn’t get the recognition they feel the fave should get, but from a marketing perspective, if you’re a musical pop group, you want to sound good and thus sell more copies of your products.

Ai-chan is a camera hog! This is most likely not even her decision! It’s not like Ai-chan is sitting up in the editing booth commanding how the PVs get cut is it? The PVs get filmed how the director wants it to be done, and final approval definitely comes from people higher up than she.

Ai-chan is no Yossie! Now let’s be fair here. I love Yossie, I love Yossie to death. She and Ai-chan have two completely different personalities, hell, they’re two different people! Yossie has always been strong, a comedian, and full of energy. Yossie is a powerhouse. Ai-chan is more shy, graceful and introspective. She’s a ballerina. It’s really not fair to compare. They’re both talented in their own right. And don’t even compare her to Miki. It’s like apples and kiwis.

Ai-chan had the position of leader thrust on her probably a LOT sooner than she expected. She admitted she felt she wasn’t ready and it was probably an extremely stressful event for her. It’s true she wasn’t always one of the forefront girls, that’s probably why she was so nervous about being suddenly thrust into the limelight. Now everyone will be looking at her, scrutinizing her moves, answers and comments; not only the other members, but the media as well.

In conclusion I think all the negative attention Ai-chan is getting lately is really unfair, and that she may be a subconscious scapegoat for something else entirely.

Oh yeah, and Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Americans! (And a Happy November 22 for all my fellow bloggers who aren’t!)

The Return of Konkon!

June 18, 2007

I had to take my sister to the ER this afternoon as she was very ill. She’s doing fine now, but I was quite worried all afternoon. Other than hearing that my sister was Okay, this little bit of news has brightened my day 1000 fold.

Full news article at Hello!Online.

The title of the single will be Narihajimeta Koi no Bell and will also feature another of my favorite H!P members, Yoshizawa Hitomi! Rock on! I am so excited for the return of gentle Konkon to the H!P line up of singers. Let’s hope this single isn’t a one time only deal.

Trifecta now complete

June 1, 2007

They say bad things happen in 3s, so the trifecta may now be complete with the resignation of current Morning Musume leader, Miki Fujimoto. (Actually ex-leader as she’s already resigned as of this post).

Am I surprised? Not at all. I can’t really say I wasn’t a fan of Mikitty’s, but I didn’t really notice her that much either. I thought she had a fantastic voice and was pretty, but my attention was always elsewhere and I was never convinced that her image fit well into Morning Musume. An opinion made all the more concrete in my mind once GAM hit the scene.

I feel bad for the rest of the girls in Momusu, but also particularly for Junjun and Linlin who haven’t really debuted on a single yet and already their new agency has been rocked with 3 major scandals in nearly as many months.

I’m actually more excited for Momusu now that Ai-chan is in charge with Risa as sub-leader. I hope things calm down over there on the H!P homefront.

More on Tsuji (EDITED)

May 8, 2007

Tsuji will be retiring from the idol business. I’m sad to see her go, but very happy for her that she’s getting married and starting a family.

The things is, I think the lack of scandal here is that UFA & Tsunku knew that she was dating. If they didn’t, I think there would have been a much stronger reaction from them than the “She’s planning to retire.” and from Tsunku’s comments he seems to fully support her.

So far from what I’ve read there’s been overwhelming support of Tsuji, her condition and her relationship. I am surprised though by the amount of comments I read about hardships Tsuji might experience in the future. If Kago’s salary description was true, Tsuji probably made the same, meaning if she was smart she saved and has boatloads of money that most young parents don’t start out with. She can afford to be a stay at home Mom and buy her kids the best.

Tsuji’s new unit!

April 24, 2007

So the rumors were true! Tsuji has been placed in a new ganguro gal unit titled “Gyaruru” with other personalities Tokito Ami and Gyaru Sone. Full story at Hello!Online. If the article is true and they will focus in ganguro and para para culture and music I can’t wait to see what they bring to the table. Fast beats and dance songs? Count me in!

Preview of the first song BOOM BOOM Meccha Maccho (Live version) can also be downloaded as well from the article above. A great dance beat to be sure, I can’t wait to see the PV! I really love this song!

The fashions will be interesting to see, and I’m really glad that Tsuji is moving on. I’m so happy for her and will definitely be pre-ordering the single!
In site news: Expect reviews of the latest 2 Haromoni@ episodes sometime this week. I was at Anime Boston all weekend and am still crashing from the trip.

Happy Birthday Hitomi!

April 12, 2007

I’ve been way too busy to really post anything as of late, but I wated to drop a quick birthday greeting to my favorite gal in H!P, Yoshizawa Hitomi!
